A figure watching from the tree line. Something reflected in a dark window that wasn't standing behind the observer. A strange, long-limbed shape sitting perfectly still in an empty room.
Witnesses described the same unusual features: disproportionately long limbs, smooth or textured bodies, and enormous, glassy eyes that seemed to reflect light differently from ordinary eyes.
The creatures were given the name Slenderlings because of their unmistakable proportions.
Nobody knows where they come from.
And nobody knows why they appear to be watching us.
What we think we know:
They observe. Constantly.
Slenderlings have been reported watching people perform ordinary activities: cooking, working, sleeping, and getting dressed. They seem particularly interested in human routines. Whether they are studying us, imitating us, or simply curious remains unknown.
They attach themselves to particular people.
Some sightings involve the same creature appearing repeatedly around the same individual. They may relocate when that person moves. Researchers disagree about whether this is deliberate selection or an unexplained coincidence.
Their eyes remain a mystery.
Their oversized, translucent eyes may be sensory organs unlike anything documented in known animals. Some witnesses claim the eyes appear to change color depending on the lighting. Others insist they reflect things that aren't visible in the room.
They appear to tolerate human customs.
Slenderlings discovered in human homes sometimes acquire clothing, accessories, or other personal objects. No one knows whether they understand the significance of these items. They seem content to keep them.
The biggest unanswered question
If Slenderlings are studying us, what are they trying to learn?
Are they documenting our behavior? Selecting people for reasons we can't understand? Trying to imitate us? Or have they been here much longer than we realize?
Perhaps the most unsettling possibility is that we aren't the ones who discovered them. They discovered us first.
